THE Australia Culture
How can we describe THE
Australia culture? Notice how I put ‘THE’ in capitals… In my personal opinion
there is no set Australian culture simply because we are made up of multiple
cultures. My family origins are from Italy, and we have based our lifestyle on
traditions back in Italy and somewhat of their culture. However, there are some
unique features to our culture that does stand out from the rest of the world
such as our figure of speech, our love for sport and the famous term ‘the
aussie bogan’. We are a country or culture that is “embracing
of the concept of multiculturalism.” Our country has been globalized simply by
us welcoming immigrants into our culture. The question is, has our culture
benefitted from allowing foreigners to live amongst us or has it doomed us?
From what you see on TV, in particular news reports, our culture has suffered
socially with the introduction to foreigners simply because our nightlife is
threatened by gangs that come from other countries, in particular Asia and
Europe, that start fights between one and other, rape women, murder people and
bash other civilians with out a valid reason. A country can’t be perfect
though. Our culture has benefitted too from combining all cultures together
with immigrants and “aspects of their home culture, including food,
music and customs, which have enriched Australian society.” Now, we stand out from the rest of the world, we are
a culture mixed from other cultures but include our own traditions to form a
place we are proud to call home.

I like that you’ve balanced the positives and negatives of multiculturalism and told us what you think. In terms of referencing, I see you’ve included quotes but with no in-text citations. Also, some of your sentences are bit lengthy and confusing. Maybe you could shorten some of them a bit?
ReplyDeleteA very interesting blog! I really like how you linked it to yourself personally as it adds more depth and understanding as opposed to a general citation of the readings. You demonstrate an interesting argument and it does get me thinking on what really does benefit our society with the convergence of cultures. Though I do like the diversity but as you point out, it does have its flaws. The only slight criticism I have is that the word ‘culture’ is quite repetitious in your blog and a synonym would’ve made it more appealing. Overall, great post!
ReplyDeleteGood blog! I agree that the Australian Culture has been influenced significantly by the immigrants coming from different countries and backgrounds. Australia has still managed to retain it's own cultural identity, the culture of Mateship and acceptance, the barbecues, the night life and the culture of living and letting live. I find the simplicity of Australian culture, truly honoured to be a part of it (for however so many years I am here) and after in the form of beliefs that I will take back with me!
ReplyDeleteGood post, do you think that ultimately multiculturalism has had a positive effect of Australia? It is interesting how a significant part of 'Aussie culture' can be defined as multiculturalism- the inclusion of multiple cultures makes up the unique 'Aussie culture'. What do you think would be the impact on 'Aussie culture' if Australia had a very anti-immigrant closed border policy with more homogeneity? I think that there is still certain boundaries between aspects of society that can cause friction, think of the race riots in Sydney, violence at the tennis and soccer between different ethnicity's. Good post
ReplyDeleteI agree that aspects of other cultures have enriched Australian society and it is most definitely a positive thing that multiculturalism is so embedded in our society. I have to wonder though that including some negative aspects of multiculturalism – the part about foreigners “raping women, murdering people and bashing other civilians” may be a little controversial and one sided? It is an interesting argument however, and there is a good use of personal opinions however more academic sources might add to the depth of your post. Well done
ReplyDeleteA great post, Very balanced in your argument and again the person link helps the reader to relate to the blog. I agree that our culture is very much influenced by immigrants from around the world. However i think that Australian culture has still been created and retained over time through events and traditions such as the ANZACS, Aussie Pub culture and the great aussie BBQ.
ReplyDeleteover all Great blog
Some great personally links involved in this blog and your writing is strong. I agree that our culture has been changed and influenced but so many other cultures form around the world, with so many Italians like your family bringing their traditions with them. Great Blog.
